Advo*care is an advocacy service for seniors and their families in the South Fraser area. We are independent of any health or social authority and work to guide and represent individuals in situations that affect their heath and care.

Advo*Care staff will source out the appropriate contacts for clients allowing them to have a stronger voice. In cases where clients are not able to speak for themselves, Advo*care staff will speak on their behalf. An advocate will help all parties have a clear understanding of their situation by assisting with gaining access to appropriate information, giving clients options, ensuring all the right questions are asked.

We believe that the first step in the advocacy process is awareness. Advocacy is about helping and empowering seniors and their families during times of difficulty, or having feelings of little or no control in their situation.

We can help you speak up for what you want and make sure that your views are heard. The advocate will guide clients in a supportive and objective manner through difficult and emotional times, ensuring that clients are in control of the advocacy process.

We could help when:

• Someone involved in your healthcare is not hearing what you want.
• You find it hard or are unable to say what you want or do not want to happen with your heath related care in the community, residential care or in your own home.
• You find it hard to understand what someone is saying to you about your health or your care.
• You feel isolated and are finding it hard to connect with the service you want.
• Your family is living out of town or you do not have any family to help speak on your behalf.
• You are a caregiver and you are feeling overwhelmed and need someone to help access support when going through difficult times.
• A policy that is directing your care does not represent what is "most important" or what you want.

If any of these situations apply to you then we believe you have a right to an independent advocate.

The Advo*care program provides a free and confidential service with the help of paid and volunteer staff.

Cornerstone Care Society is a non profit charitable organization governed by a Board of Directors.

Advo*care is a free service funded by donations, grants and fundraising. if you would like to make a donation or enquire about or participate in fundraising, please call or email us.

Official tax receipts will be provided for all donations.
